Welcoming Greeks bearing tasty gifts
LIKE a big Greek family we enjoyed an amazing dinner under the olive tree in the Greece Pavilion restaurant. With open arms, the whole Munching Matilda team was welcomed to sit down around the table, and together with the restaurant manager Kiki, the chef and his wife, we had the most delicious samples from the Greek kitchen.
The food, the conversation and the atmosphere really made me feel like we were sitting in a small tavern on one of the many beautiful islands of Greece. If it had not been for all the Chinese visitors taking pictures of us, I might have forgotten that we still were in China.
Before all the lovely food landed on our table we were served a smooth rich-flavored red wine made from the grape Agiorgitiko, which is almost exclusively grown in Greece. The flavor went very well together with the feta cheese, the olives, and the fresh tomatoes that soon were put in front of us. It was a long time since I felt that distinguished creamy, salty taste of really good feta cheese and I enjoyed every bite of it.
The Greek salad is something I can never get enough of. The freshness and the taste combination of the already-mentioned ingredients together with the red onion are just always right.
Another typical Greek dish is of course the Moussaka. This fantastic casserole is made by eggplant, layered with a spicy meat filling and topped with a creamy bchamel sauce that is baked to golden perfection. And the taste follows that description. Also the lamb we were served was incredibly tasty and of the very best quality, according to the chef, and we could tell by its tenderness.
Together with the homemade French fries, which we all absolutely loved, the dinner reached its peak. The modest chef said that these marvelously good French fries were very easy to make, but our media manager Victoria countered by saying that the best chef is the one who can make the most delicious dish out of nothing!
As we sat there and munched on all the luscious food, we talked about memories from our own experiences of this beautiful, exotic Mediterranean country and we decided that we have to do this again in Greece one day. The time flew by very quickly and suddenly it was time to leave our newly-found friends of the Greek Pavilion restaurant, but the feeling that I had enjoyed a Greek family dinner stayed with me for a long time.
