Every drop counts
THE Hilton Hotel group promises to cut down at least 50 percent of water usage by 2030 through every facet of its daily operation. This purpose was announced at its global sales week in early November.
Plastic-bottled water in gyms and meeting rooms will be replaced by glass-bottled versions. It is expected to reduce more than 55 million plastic bottles in Hilton hotels around the world within a year.
From last September the hotel chain began to phase out plastic straws. By the end of December straws made of paper will substitute plastic ones. Another water saving initiative has also been introduced. Green cards were left in rooms to remind guests of putting linen into a basket if they want them laundered. Otherwise the linen won’t be washed every day during their stay.
“In the kitchens, chefs will no longer defrost frozen food with water. That is water consuming and not sanitary,” said Alan Zhan, Zhejiang area general manager of DoubleTree by Hilton. “At the same time, we prefer local food materials rather than transporting from other cities. That could reduce environment pollution caused in transportation.”
In order to protect the environment further, Hilton is going to use energy-saving lamps and new air-conditioning systems, while staff are being encouraged to use recycling paper and their own cups in office work.
