Lakeside escape from the metropolis

LOCATED on the edge of Shanghai's largest lake, Yue Hu Lake, the stylish Le Meridien She Shan Shanghai in Songjiang District provides guests with a relaxed and elegant ambience amid the natural beauty of the Sheshan National Tourism Resort.

The hotel provides both professional conference facilities and outdoor leisure surroundings, with a mini golf course to be completed in June.

The hotel has also started special room packages in conjunction with the Shanghai Sculpture Park located just next door. Customers booking rooms online at the Le Meridien She Shan can get a certain amount of free tickets to the Sculpture Park.

Situated amongst lakes and hills, guests at the hotel can escape the stress of the city while enjoying the comforts of the facilities, and if needed, still concentrate on business matters, says management.

"One of the advantages for both the business and leisure travelers are our surrounding attractions. Having a meeting surrounded by nature and enjoying our great service will add to your meeting experience," says Coetzer Deysel, general manager of the Le Meridien She Shan Shanghai.

The world-class meeting and conference center can accommodate a wide range of event requirements. With one of the biggest column-less ballrooms in Shanghai, it is a perfect venue, says management. The meeting spaces of 4,500 square meters includes the 1,770 square meters column-free Grand Ballroom accommodating up to 1,800 banquet guests. It can also be divided into smaller, more intimate spaces, if needed.

"All meetings and conferences can be organized in relaxed surroundings by our specialists," Deysel adds.

Only a 45-minute drive from downtown, or a five-minute drive from the nearest Metro station, Le Meridien She Shan is easily accessible by everyone.

Some non-residents head over to the hotel for the hotel's lovely Big Blue Weekend Brunch, which includes access to the hotel's pools, sauna, gym and beach volleyball court.

The indoor swimming pool maintains a constant temperature all-year-round with room and water temperatures on display near the entrance.

Deysel most recently served as the opening general manager at the W Retreat Koh Samui, and prior to that was in charge of operations at the W Retreat and Spa Maldives, as hotel manager. His earlier positions included management of boutique lodges in South Africa, including Madikwe River Lodge, Shibula Lodge and Bush Spa, Exeter Game Lodges and Chapungu Tented Camp.

Le Meridien, the Paris-born hotel brand currently represented by 100 properties in 50 countries and regions, was acquired by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide in 2005.

"This brand's French background is evident in the hotel decoration, design and arts events," Deysel says.

Deysel uses one word to describe Shanghai - exciting. "It has a great mix of all that China offers, combined with influences from all over the world," he says.

He leads a young and dynamic team at the Le Meridien She Shan, consisting mostly of local people.

"You need to adapt to others' views and cultures, finding a healthy balance," he says.

"And as a visitor from another country, you have to adapt to China. The team is big, and it's important to get to know each other as much as possible. The personal touch can cross the nationalities."

Regarding the fierce competition in the Shanghai hotel sector, Deysel places his faith in quality.

More competition brings more opportunities and demands better quality in the hotel industry, he believes.

And competitiveness in the industry can only be good news for customers, says Deysel, providing more options at more reasonable prices, while offering work opportunities for the next generation of hoteliers.
