Baby-voiced 'screen goddess' just girl next door
TAIWANESE model-turned-actress Lin Chi-ling is many Chinese men's unattainable goddess for her nice figure and sweet baby voice.
But in her latest romantic comedy "Say Yes," Lin becomes the girl next door after meeting Mr Right.
Adapted from a well-known Japanese TV series "101st Proposal," the film released in mid-February is about an ordinary-looking bachelor (Huang Bo) who finally wins the heart of the elegant girl of his dreams through perseverance and a kind heart.
Lin plays a cellist Ye Xun wounded by love but with the bachelor's help she gradually recovers as they do simple things like eating watermelon at a street stall .
Lin says she hopes the film will change the stereotype of her as oh-so tender, feminine and unattainable.
At a recent press conference, she showed her muscles and lifted costar Huang Bo, who plays the lucky bachelor.
South Korean rapper PSY, who performed the "horse-riding dance" with Lin at a Spring Festival gala, said that the 39-year-old actress looks like a "sexy wild horse" when she dances.
In 1987 Lin graduated from the University of Toronto with a bachelor's degree of Western art history and economics. She wanted to pursue a career in fine art but the Taipei Fine Arts Museum turned her away because she lacked an advanced degree.
Then she took up modeling and became a supermodel, appearing on billboards and TV commercials in Taiwan and on the Chinese mainland.
In 2008, Lin debuted in John Wood's epic "Red Cliff." "Say Yes" is her sixth film.
She talked to reporters about her film experience and her own "dream wedding."
Q: How do you describe your acting in "Say Yes?"
A: The film wants to tell people in love or those who pursuing love that true love is unconditional and not materialistic. It was a happy experience cooperating with Huang Bo. At the end of the film, I asked director Leste Chen to add a scene depicting the cellist's proposal to the ordinary guy after he was turned down many times. Sometimes the true love is not love at the first sight. On many occasions Mr Right is right in front of you but you haven't taken the chance.
Q: Many people think you are a screen goddess. What would you be like if you were in love?
A: I am not unapproachable and passive in love. Like all girls, I am waiting for Mr Right. If I realize he is my Mr Right, I would probably take the initiative in my pursuit of love.
Q: What's your criteria for choosing a mate?
A: He must be honest and righteous. I do care how he treats his family and friends.
Q: What's your dream wedding like?
A: I want to have a big but casual lawn wedding. Everyone can talk, socialize and have great fun in the warm sunshine in bare feet.
Q: People used to call you an empty vase? Your view?
A: I don't care much what people think of me. It's been seven years since people criticized my "baby voice" that they think is phony and insincere.
Q: What's your New Year's wish?
A: I wish my parents good health and happiness. I hope for a good balance between work and family. I hope to spend more time with them.
