Who will be the breakout model of the fall season? She could be one of these three newcomers: Dempsey Stewart, Wang Xiao and Merethe Hopland. We spent a recent day of casting calls with each fetching fledgling - trudging through the slush, hailing cabs and waiting in long lines.
Dempsey Stewart 18, Australia
She didn't have much time to prepare for her first trip to New York. "I only knew the night before that I was coming here," says the soft-spoken Dempsey Stewart, a native of Perth, Australia.
After a few local gigs and a brief stint in Tokyo, the 18-year-old is ready for the big leagues and all the compulsory spontaneity that comes with it.
"I don't even know when I'm going back," she says. Naturally, she's also flexible when it comes to her living arrangements, shacking up with seven other Wilhelmina models in a cozy two-bedroom in Midtown Manhattan.
"It's not like where they stay on 'America's Next Top Model' but it's all just very exciting," she laughs with the ease only a jittery teenager could muster on an icy February morning.
Her low-maintenance attitude - not to mention her mile-high legs and flawless complexion - got her through a day chock-full of castings, including stops at Alexander Wang, Peter Som, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Nanette Lepore.
Wang Xiao 23, China
After a successful career in China, Xiao Wang, or Wang Xiao in correct Mandarin, is setting off on her third season of New York collections.
Her experience shows.
The 23-year-old from Beijing - she signed with Wilhelmina in 2009 and moved to New York four months ago - takes on castings with a professional ease.
Yet in between it all, her bubbly personality shines through: "I love New York. I love the city. People are very friendly, you ask them for help and they do!"
She also loves fashion. On a recent day of castings - 3.1 Phillip Lim, Honor, Jill Stuart, Rachel Comey - she was dressed in head-to-toe Zara (shearling coat, ripped jeans) and Steve Madden wedges. Next up after a modeling career? Fashion stylist, of course.
Merethe Hopland 19, Norway
Pulling out her BlackBerry, Merethe Hopland points to a photo of a girl-next-door type with bleached, shoulder-length hair.
"That's me in September," says the 19-year-old from Bergen, Norway. A little hair care goes a long way.
She recently took the scissors to her damaged locks herself (followed by a professional touch-up), resulting in a whole new look that emphasizes her sculpted cheekbones.
Represented by Marilyn, the 5-foot, 11-inch Hopland is making her New York runway debut this season (she walked a few shows in London and Milan for spring), and has been called to castings for some of the biggest names in the city, including Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg.
