Taking kids on road odyssey

TWO families with young children have undertaken spectacular and grueling odysseys spanning continents because they love adventure, want to see the world and want their children to learn through experience.

Travel is a dream that many people put off, but the Vogels from the United States and the Zapps from Argentina decided not to make excuses and just do it.

John and Nancy Vogel from the state of Idaho - and twin sons then age 10 - set off by bicycle on a three-year journey from Alaska to Argentina. To the many critics who said the boys were too young and shouldn't drop out of school, Nancy Vogel says "Hogwash."

Herman and Candelaria Zapp from Buenos Aires set off 11 years ago on a round-the-world trip in an 83-year-old American touring car with only enough money for six months - and had four babies along the way. The eldest is now 9 years old. The trip goes on.

They too went from Argentina to Alaska, taking a detour down the Amazon River. They just kept going. Today they're driving their American classic car around Indonesia and plan to visit China in October on the journey they call "Spark Your Dream."
