Eyeing up spring make-up trends

WHILE flawless skin and scarlet lips are still a big hit on the runway, the eyes remained the focus this spring. Simply pile on your favorite mascara for clumpy lashes, paint your lid in soft baby blues, eye-popping shades of turquoise and rich, dark navy, or add in sharp, graphic lines - the combinations are endless!

? Kind of Blue

From New York, London to Milan, blue eyeshadow has taken spring 2013 runways by storm in all sorts of tones and forms.

A fun use was seen at Monique Lhuillier, where a shimmery vibrant blue was applied on to the lid, blended off to the browbone and finished with a customized gold pigment on the inner corners.

At Joy Cioci, the look was vintage mermaid with ocean blue eyes, a glistening cheek and pink lips. As for Jeremy Scott, makeup artist Kabuki was inspired by an Arabian theme, which translated into a dramatic smoky eye in shades of blue, brown and black and a dash of gold.

Taking things to the extreme was the Pop Art inspired, almost theatrical look at Vivienne Westwood Red Label, where models were given bright cyan shadows on the eyes with clashing bright red lips.

For a more wearable use of the color that is great for every day, you can try a flick of aqua liner along the upper lashline like Anthony Vaccarello or pair a navy blue eyeliner with a touch of white on the inner corners as seen on the Just Cavalli runway.

Thanks to a nod to the 1960s, lashes are back this season. Inspired by Edie Sedgwick, the look at Marc Jacobs consisted of lashings of mascara, bold brows, smudgy eyes and nude lips. At Kenzo and Philip Lim, models were given a heavy dose of mascara on both upper and lower lashes until they were clumpy. To further intensify the clump effect at Wes Gordon, makeup artist Charlotte Willer added in eyeliner using quick, uneven strokes to create smudgy definition. But to really up the ante like the fluttery lashes at Moschino and luxurious smoky eyes from Gucci, nothing beats a pair of false eyelashes. Just make sure you wait until the glue turns tacky before you apply. Remember to also fill in the gap between your real lashes and the fake ones with an eyeliner to blend everything together.

? Lining up

Eyeliner continues to be a hit on the runway this spring and the looks we are seeing just keep getting better and more creative.

For Anna Sui, makeup artist Pat McGrath created a rebellious punk look with vibrant theatrical paints on the contrast of an otherwise ordinary smoky eye while strips of blue, yellow, orange and pink from a neoprene bathing suit covered the lower eye of models at Fendi.

Pick a look and let your imagination run wild! Just remember to finish with fresh and dewy skin (try MAC Prep + Prime BB Beauty Compact or Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF 15 PA+) and a dab of color on the lips (in Fresh Melon is perfect for this).
