Party looks sure to shine

THIS holiday season, get ready to party in style with some of the most classic yet gorgeous looks - bold, statement-making red lips, dramatic smoky eyes drenched in metallic hues, plus a decadent touch of gold.

¥ Metallic Smoky Eyes

dramatic smoky eyes are undeniably a great way to vamp up your look for the holidays. Look for colors like olive, purple, gun metal gray, bronze and blue with a metallic finish ? those will all look great against brown eyes.

For a quick, smoky eye you can easily do at home, start by applying a primer or cream eyeshadow on the eyelid. This will give the shadow something to grab onto. Next, sweep the color of your choice onto the lid and lower eye with a brush. Apply a darker color (or even black if you like more drama) on the crease and outer corner of the eye. Blend with a finger or brush so there is a graduation of color but avoid bringing the darker color too close to the inner corners, which can close up the eyes. Finish with eyeliner and lots of mascara.

When working with dark shadows, always apply before foundation or concealer. That way, you can easily clean up any pigment that falls onto the undereye area with moisturizer or makeup remover, without having to start all over.

¥ Bold Red Lips

If you have not ventured into the world of red lips, now is the perfect time. Red can instantly transform your face and make you look polished for both day and night.

To create the perfect red lip, always start with moisturized, flake-free lips. Outline and fill in the lips completely with a neutral lip liner or one that matches with your lipstick. This will help to create a base for your lipstick so it can stay on better. Then using a lip brush, apply the lipstick from the outer corner to the inner corner. Repeat on the other side. To finish, blot with tissue paper and add on another layer of lipstick if necessary.

Feel like going that extra mile? Add a touch of high shine lip gloss with sparkles over your red lip to give it holiday gleam.

Color-wise, oxblood lips might be all the rage for fall, but the holidays call for more classic hues. If you have light skin or pink undertones, stick with a blue-based true red or cherry red. Those with warmer or medium to dark skintones, go for a tomato red with yellow undertones instead. As for the formula, matte is no doubt more low maintenance compared to gloss, as it can keep color from traveling.

To prevent lipstick from transferring onto the teeth, celebrity makeup artist Gina Brooke puts a thin layer of Vaseline on them, a trick from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Another cool tip from the same era is to dab concealer on the outer corners of the mouth to create a lifting effect that will make you look like you are slightly smiling all the time.

¥ Golden Touch

When it comes to choosing a color for the holidays, nothing is more festive than gold. A classic way to wear it is to pair a shimmery gold eye with a red or coral lip.

To really up the ante, try creating a gilded effect with foiling, a technique that involves wetting the brush with a mixing medium or even water before application.

Just make sure your shadows can be used wet, if not, try picking up some shadow on your brush before you apply the mixing medium onto it. Let the shadow dry completely before moving on to another shade.

Another fantastic way to wear gold is to use it as a highlighting color. Adding a dab of gold in the inner corners or on the center of the lid can really brighten up the eyes while dusting the color on top of the cheekbones is guaranteed make your cheeks pop.

For an allover glow, you can wear gold on the eyes, cheeks, lips and decolletage at the same time. Just remember to keep the color light and apply with a light hand to avoid looking like a disco ball.

To choose the right gold for you, look at your skintone. If you are on the fair side, try one with a pale, silvery undertone. On medium complexions, look for a gold with a tinge of beige or bronze. For darker skin, a warm, coppery gold is your best bet.

Extra Holiday Makeup Tips

In addition to using the right colors, a flawless complexion is key to making your holiday look work. Below are a few tips on how you can nail it:

* Makeup will not apply well to dry, flaky skin. Exfoliate regularly to get rid of dead skin and moisturize at all times.

* Before you apply foundation, prep your skin with a primer. This will lock in moisture and make your foundation apply better.

* Steer clear of alcohol-based or powder foundations, as these can be drying on the skin. Opt instead for liquid or cream foundations.

* When you are finished, set your look with a makeup spray to tone down cakiness and to help make your makeup last longer.
