Piombo finds niche with unique fabrics

The distinct blend of eccentricity and classicism and the joie de vivre spirit is surprisingly found in MP di Massimo Piombo spring/summer 2014 collection shown during Milan Men’s Fashion Week in June.

Menswear designer Piombo, hailing from Genoa, who started this new line with partner Kiton two years ago, promotes an eclectic, often eccentric aesthetic with a couture approach like back in 1950s and 60s. The excellence in details shines.

“While all the brands tend to be very commercial, we try to recapture a couture-like, sophisticated feeling for the new generation,” he said. “It’s like a secret brand for the beautiful people.”

In joining forces with the Neapolitan tailoring powerhouse Kiton, Piombo has accessed some of the most exclusive fabric suppliers and tailors.

Piombo himself is fabric-obsessed. He picks the best fabrics from small mills around the world — silk from Lyon, France and India, cotton from Belgium, moleskin from Hungary, Massawa cotton from Africa. “More important than the fits are the fabrics,” he said, adding that the success of the brand is due to the most unique, exclusive fabrics in the world. “We look at fabric archives from the 1950s and 1960s and draw fantastic inspiration from the mix of colors and patterns and we then create a different atmosphere for a new generation.”

The best quality fabrics, a touch of color, the cutting, with MP twist is exactly the same concept couture houses had 50 years ago, according to Piombo.

“I think the future also has room for super niche brands like us that stand for individuality and exclusively, completely different from everybody else in the fashion world,” the founder and designer said.

“I don’t expect to grow big but more like a membership club for the most exclusive customers.”

The top 50 retailers that carry MP Massimo Piombo include Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys New York, 10 Corso Como, Tomorrowland Tokyo.

Ironically, the man who designs a wardrobe of boldly saturated hues and patterns wears a classic blue uniform for his everyday look.
