5 free things to do in historic, arty, fun Liverpool

THERE is a close connection between Liverpool in the United Kingdom and Shanghai. Both cities are important ports in their part of the world, and a quick glimpse at the waterfronts in the twinned cities, the Bund in Shanghai and the Pier Head with its Three Graces in Liverpool show similarities.

Liverpool is famous for its musical heritage and a thriving cultural scene and nightlife. And, there is of course the football. If you have spent all your money on an expensive Premier League football ticket, there are plenty of options for free stuff to do during the rest of your visit!

Sefton Park

A significant area of Liverpool is covered by parks and public green spaces, many listed for its Victorian heritage. Head to Sefton Park for a stroll or an al fresco lunch.

Don't forget to go by the magnificent Palm House, a Victorian glasshouse displaying a huge number of plants from around the world. There are regular cultural events in the Palm House, which is open to the public every day, as well as it being a very popular venue for weddings. (www.palmhouse.org.uk)

Cathedrals

An impressive cathedral is always a must-see when visiting a city - and Liverpool has got two.

The Anglican Cathedral is the biggest in the UK, and the fifth largest in the world.

The more modern looking Catholic Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral was actually finished before the more traditional Anglican, and is officially the older one of the two.

The cathedrals are symbolically linked together by Hope Street, where you will also find the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and Paul McCartney's fame academy, LIPA (Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts), plus some great places for a meal or a drink. 100 Naked Men

Crosby Beach, about 20 minutes north of Liverpool, is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Not only is it kilometers of lovely beaches for great walks, it is also where you find an art installation by Anthony Gormley called "Another Place." 100 naked cast iron men, modelled on the artist himself, are located along 3 kilometers of the beach, stretching 1 kilometer out to sea. With tide differences up to 9 meters, they never look the same - one day you can see only the top of their heads, whilst at other times they are exposed in all their nakedness - unless they are dressed up by random people passing by, for example in the red or blue tops of local teams Liverpool or Everton football clubs. National Museums and Galleries Merseyside

The Liverpool city region has more national museums and galleries than any other UK region outside London - seven all together.

The Museum of Liverpool at the waterfront opened in its new, purpose-built location in July 2011, and features all walks of life in Liverpool. Then there is William Brown Street in the middle of town, with the classical Walker Art Gallery and the World Museum Liverpool next to each other.

Head to the restored warehouses at the Albert Dock for the Merseyside Maritime Museum, also housing the International Slavery Museum. Across the river Mersey, in the picturesque village of Port Sunlight, is the fantastic Lady Lever Art Gallery.

Sudley House, a Victorian merchant's house in Aighburth, is also well worth a visit. All have free entry.

Beatlemania

As the birthplace of the Fab Four, there are a host of Beatles-related sights and activities in Liverpool, and a good few are free.

Mathew Street in the middle of the city center is home to the Cavern Club, where the band rose to fame in the 1960s. The street is filled with Beatles memories, this is, after all where they played and lived. Underneath the southern suburban sky of Allerton and Woolton, you can visit the gates of Strawberry Field and wander along Penny Lane.
