All great journeys start with coffee

NATIONALITY: Australian

Profession/Title: General Manager of Park Hyatt Sanya Sunny Bay Resort

How often do you travel? Monthly

Objective of travel, Mostly business. But when traveling I like to experience the local culture and meet new people.

Favorite traveling style: Enjoying great food, music and culture during a spur of the moment weekend away.

When I finish a journey, I always...

Unpack, organize myself and do some light exercise to unwind.

How many destinations have you already been? Dozens. Mainly throughout Asia.

Q: What kind of hotel will you choose when traveling?

A: It depends on the purpose of the trip. For business, location and access to efficient service is vital. For leisure, access to cultural attractions and a knowledgeable concierge team is invaluable.

Q: What do you value most when choosing a hotel?

A: The ability to deliver on the product and service promise.

Q: What facility or service do you think is necessary during a hotel stay?

A: A great gym and a delicious breakfast!

Q: What do you expect most of a hotel for an enjoyable stay?

A: Personalized service, be it simple and efficient when on business or attentive and intuitive when on leisure.

Q: What do you usually do in a hotel apart from resting in your room?

A: Breakfast is an important start to the day and a great cup of coffee can ensure the day starts the right way.

Q: How do you book a hotel with an affordable room rate?

A: I always book direct with the hotel via its website. Sites like Tripadvisor and C-trip are great for research but the best value is always found direct with the hotel.

Q: Please share an unforgettable stay in a hotel.

A: I had a memorable experience at Park Hyatt Tokyo around 20 years ago shortly after the hotel opened. The hotel, design and service combined to create an experience which was so far above anything I had seen or experienced up until that point. I still use that experience as a reference point today.

Q: What hotels are you looking forward to staying at in the future?

A: I will hopefully have a chance to stay at the Park Hyatt New York, which opened last year. As our flagship Park Hyatt, I am looking forward to experiencing this recent addition to our family of hotels.

Q: What is your favorite destination?

A: My favorite city (aside from my hometown of Melbourne) is Tokyo.

Q: What’s so special about it?

A: Access to wonderful food, fascinating culture and a large dose of the unexpected never fails to create a memorable visit. I try and visit at least once a year.

Q: What necessities do you take?

A: Comfortable walking shoes. There are so many places to explore in Tokyo.

Q: What do you do upon arriving?

A: Check into the hotel and head to the bustling streets of Shibuya.

Q: What places do you have to visit?

A: Shibuya provides the postcard Tokyo experience; thousands upon thousands of people, bright lights and controlled chaos. If you like music, Tokyo is an absolute paradise. Great record stores and amazing live music experiences can be found throughout the city.

Q: What local specialties do you enjoy in Tokyo?

A: I love Japanese food, so a visit to a sushi restaurant and an izakaya is essential.
