Celebrating Chongming art and culture

THE Culture and Art Festival of Chongming is underway, featuring vibrant folk arts, painting and calligraphy, local talent shows and celebrity performances.

The autumn festival, which began last Thursday, runs through November 15. The weather is clear, the sun still warm and the breezes cool on the scenic island known for its eco-tourism and sustainable development.

The festival, held 14 times since 1989, is a window on Chongming culture, past and present. It gathers people in the arts, as well as ordinary people, for cultural and artistic exchange. The aim is to get people more involved in cultural activities and promote Chongming's cultural identity.

The festival features a range of 18 diverse projects.

They include exhibitions of folk arts, singing contests, calligraphy and painting exhibitions, folk music performances, a photo exhibition and other events.

The opening ceremony was held in Chongming Forest Park and featured a stage play about Chongming's history and culture. The festival stages events at the new Culture Pavilion, library and art gallery.

Celebrities perform onstage with amateurs. They include famous erhu (two-string Chinese fiddle) player Min Huifen, cartoonists from Shanghai, photographers from the Yangtze River Delta and artists from Taiwan.

The festival also promotes friendship across the Taiwan Straits.

Local folk songs and Yingzhou (old name for Chongming) melodies will be performed by residents. The festival has no requirements for professional qualifications, and everyone is welcome to perform.

Historic memorabilia

The Chongming Folk Collection includes old contracts, posters, stamp collections, newspapers, family trees and other documentation of old times.

Singing competition

The popular contest among locals is held every two years to choose the island's top 10 singers of folk and popular music.

Winners of previous festivals will put on the show.

Teen art competition

Calligraphy and paintings by Chongming teenagers will be exhibited, along with previous award-winning works by teens on the island. The competition aims to encourage creativity and promote traditional Chinese culture and art among young people.

Seminar on great men

The seminar focuses on famous industrialist Zhang Jian from Haimen, Jiangsu Province, and Chongqing native Wang Qingmu who contributed to the economy, culture and public good. The two men contributed to business connections between Chongming and Haimen in the early 20th century. Researchers have studied relevant letters, newspapers and journals linked to the two men; results will be published in a collection.

Island folk songs

A performance of diverse folk songs will be held daily from October 1 to 7. The folk songs, both vivacious and sonorous, are considered part of the island's intangible cultural heritage.

Classic Chinese movies

Good domestic films will be shown for a week during the National Day holiday. Screened films will be related to rural life, like that on Chongming. A session of review and discussion help cultivate critical thinking.

Stove painting art

Chongming farmers used to decorate their large stoves that were made of clay or covered with tile. Many were built into walls, so there were large surfaces covered with scenes of rural life, birds, flowers, scenes from legends and good luck emblems. Some people specialized in stove painting, considered part of the island's cultural traditions. There will be demonstrations of stove painting, locals will sing the praises of stove painting and the Stove Painting Culture Museum will open. The events aim to publicize the folk art and attract visitors to agricultural tourism on the island.

Cross-Strait art

An exhibition titled "Love the Chinese Nation" features works by both Taiwanese and Chongming artists celebrating landscapes, culture, customs and people of both islands.

A pen-pal event will be held. Taiwan is China's largest island and Chongming is the third largest. Chongming is also the world's largest alluvial island. The two islands have held numerous cultural exchanges and the events promote knowledge about Chongming.

Date: October 30-November 13

Venue: Chongming Art Gallery, Chengqiao New Town

Yangtze Delta photos

The exhibition is titled "Yangtze River Bridge and Chongming-Qidong Bridge Open to Traffic" and it depicts local scenery, happy daily life and prosperity in Pudong New Area, Chongming and Qidong. Around 150 works will be displayed.

By bus:

Getting to Chongming became easy when the tunnel-bridge opened three years ago. Visitors can take a bus at Exit 6 of the Metro stop at the Museum of Science and Technology. The trip to Chenjia Town on eastern Chongming takes just an hour. Buses run daily from 6am to 7pm, with around three buses every hour.

By ferry:

Take Metro Line 3 to Baoyang Pier, then take a ferry.

By car:

Take Changjiang Tunnel-Bridge Expressway to Chenhai Road, and then Chongming Avenue.
