Kempinski GM talks hotels, Brussels
Q: What kind of hotel will you choose to stay in during a trip?
A: This totally depends on where I go. Sometimes I stay with friends, sometimes a B&B and on other occasions a luxury hotel.
Q: What do you value most when choosing a hotel?
A: Privacy and personalized service. I don’t like if somebody is permanently standing behind me.
Q: Any facility or service do you think is necessary during a hotel stay?
A: I enjoy a good restaurant and/or a bar. In addition, most of the time I check the spa.
Q: What do you usually do in a hotel during your stay apart from resting in your room?
A: Maybe breakfast, dinner, a nightcap, the spa and gym.
Q: How do you book a hotel with an affordable room rate?
A: I’m pretty old fashioned and I combine searching the Internet, but then I call directly.
Q: Share with us an unforgettable stay in a hotel.
A: The UAE has a tented resort in the middle of the desert. The gazelles would come and drink from your private pool and a game ranger takes you into the desert and explains the wildlife to you.
Q: Any hotels you are looking forward to stay in the future?
A: I will stay in the “Old Nellie” in South Africa sooner or later.
Q: If you want to share a special destination, what would it be and why?
A: I visit Brussels, Belgium for special memories from my time as a student.
Q: What’s so special about it?
A: I just had a great time with my schoolmates and we repeat this trip every forth year during the soccer World Cup.
Q: Any necessities you have to take when going to Brussels?
A: The usual stuff: telephone, credit cards, a pocket knife, nothing special.
Q: What do you do upon arriving?
A: Sit down — preferably outside — and watch what is going on.
Q: Any places you have to visit or things you have see when visiting Brussels?
A: I have certain rituals when visiting certain places. For example when I go with my friends to Brussels, we always eat at the same Chinese restaurant. Don’t ask me why.
Q: Any local specialties you have to try?
A: Wherever we go, we will try local food.
Q: Share with us an unforgettable experience during your trip to Brussels.
A: Four years ago I met Eddie Merckx on his 65th birthday in the Grand Place in Brussels (cyclist who won the Tour de France as well as the Giro’Italia five times each).

How often do you travel?
Usually twice on business overseas and one time privately, not necessarily overseas.
How many destinations have you already been to?
I don’t know. A lot, but I have not yet been to the African continent as well as to Australia.
What does traveling mean to you in your life?
The world is a book and those who don’t travel read only one page.
Do you prefer to travel alone or with family/friends?
I like to share my experiences! I never travel alone. Preferably with my wife.
