Luring the zhiqing home
Northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province has launched several new itineraries this summer to bring Shanghai zhiqing (educated youth) back to where they once lived.
Heilongjiang is the second home for many Shanghai zhiqing as it is home to a big zhiqing community from Shanghai and elsewhere. In the late 1970s, zhiqing were sent to the countryside to learn farming skills and support rural development.
These trails, ranging from two to nine days, link the Zhiqing Museum, Beidahuang Memorial Hall, Jiusan Farm, the Wang Jinxi (a model oil worker dubbed “iron man”) Memorial Hall and tourist attractions like the Wudalianchi Scenic Area and Xingkai Lake.
Heilongjiang is China’s northnmost province and is well-known as a summer resort. Almost half of it is forest. The Wudalianchi Scenic Area features the world’s most complete and well-preserved volcanic landforms.
