Make a Date for Ocean-focused Yeosu World Expo 2012
WONDERING where to have fun after World Expo Shanghai? The answer could be Yeosu in South Korea, host city of World Expo 2012.
The theme of the Yeosu World Expo 2012 is "The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities," with subthemes of "Preservation and Sustainable Development of the Ocean and Coast," "Cutting-edge Maritime Industries and Technologies," and "Creative Marine Activities and Cooperation of Humankind."
The event will be held from May 12 to August 12, 2012, with participation of more than 100 countries and international organizations, and 8 million visitors.
Yeosu is a composition of the Yeosu peninsula and 317 islands located at the center of South Korea's southern coast with a population of about 300,000.
Although it's only about one-tenth the size of Shanghai, Yeosu is renowned for abundant resources of fisheries and well-preserved marine ecosystems.
It boasts two national marine parks -- Hallyeosudo National Marine Park and Dadohae National Marine Park.
Residents of the city may display the Turtle Ship and play various types of games, such as tug of war and traditional rituals at the Jinnamje Memorial Festival, Yeosu's most famous cultural event, held every year around May 5.
The festival is held in memory of a national hero, Admiral Yi Sunsin, who built the invincible turtle ship to defend the invaders.
