Park Hyatt GM shares travel insights
PETER Zhou
Nationality: Australian
Profession/Title: Hotelier/general manager of Park Hyatt Ningbo
How often do you travel?
I travel once a month, mostly on business, sometimes for leisure.
Favorite traveling style?
I fly for long-distance trips, mainly in business class, or I sometimes travel by car to surrounding cities.
Q: What do you always do after returning from a trip?
A: Flying always makes me feel tired, especially when traveling abroad. When I get back to the hotel, the atmosphere makes me feel comfortable and I can relax. So I will usually choose to have a body massage, enjoy a glass of wine and then have a good rest.
Q: What to look for during a trip?
A: Since I previously worked as executive chef and director of food and beverage, finding gourmet food and wine is the most interesting part of my trip.
Q: What do you always pack?
A: Shirts, business suits, phone charger, passport, shoes — but the most important thing for me is to pack some documents relating to the hotel, such as proposals and contracts.
Q: What is your preferred airline?
A: I like JAL for its quality service, food and drink.
Q: Do you have any tips about seating on a flight?
A: I like to choose an aisle seat, as it is more comfortable and easy to get out of.
Q: Best in-flight meal or activity?
A: The JAL in-flight meal always provides a good selection and a nice presentation and the taste is suitable for Asian people. Also, the choice of healthy ingredients and the cooking methods deserve to be mentioned.
Q: How do you get over jet-lag?
A: By having a good sleep.
Q: What are your favorite hotels? What makes these hotels so memorable?
A: My favorite is Park Hyatt Milano, Hyatt’s first property in Italy, a luxurious hotel situated on Via Tommaso Grossi in the heart of Milan. The hotel is set in a palatial and historic building that dates from the 1870s and it provides morning jogging and cycling trips for guest who want to explore Milan in another way. You can enjoy exquisite afternoon tea at La Cupola Lobby Lounge and classic Italian dishes that feature the local cuisine of the Lombardy region and the freshest farm produce in the The Park Restaurant.
Q: What do you value most when choosing a hotel?
A: I value cleanliness, shower-pressure, Internet access, breakfast with a choice of local food, location, and complimentary F&B offerings.
Q: What hotels do you look forward to staying at in the future?
A: I would like to stay at Grand Hyatt Lijiang, the first grand resort hotel in China which has just opened its Mountain Lodge in picturesque Ganhaizi, at the base of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Also, Armani Hotel Dubai, which is probably one of the most luxurious hotels in the world.
Q: What is one of your favorite destinations and what makes it so special?
A: Melbourne is my favorite. It is a city of culture and also an international fashion capital, famous worldwide for clothing, art, music, television production, film, dance and so on. I have been living in this city for more than 15 years and I love the lifestyle and food variety because one third of Melbourne residents are immigrants.
Q: Best/must purchases in Melbourne?
A: The red wine from Penfolds Winery in the Barossa Valley, which is Australia’s most famous.
Q: Where are you planning to go next and why?
A: I plan to go to Greece and Spain. These two southern Mediterranean countries have similar historical and cultural backgrounds, which are different from other countries. Their architecture is special, as are food and drinks.
Q: What’s the strangest request that a guest has made at your hotel?
A: A guest liked our hotel very much and planned to host a big event there. But the ballroom seemed too small for him, so he requested that we knock down the walls to enlarge the area!
