Saint Sava: a masterpiece of Orthodox splendor

The Church of Saint Sava is a landmark that crowns the list of must-see attractions in Belgrade.

Widely regarded as one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, it offers a visit filled with awe and inspiration. Having explored many Protestant and Catholic churches before, I was thrilled to experience the grandeur of an Orthodox church for the first time.

From afar, the Church of Saint Sava is unmistakable. Its iconic blue domes dominate the skyline, effortlessly guiding visitors toward it without the need for a map. Up close, its understated exterior surprises with a refined simplicity: Off-white marble walls paired with black eaves exude quiet elegance.

Step inside, however, and the simplicity gives way to breathtaking opulence. The interior is a sensory marvel, adorned with gold-covered frescoes and intricate details that rival the finest churches worldwide. The dome, in particular, is a masterpiece — a gilded wonder that surpasses even the grandeur of London’s St Paul’s Cathedral. While St Paul’s showcases elaborate Baroque artistry, Saint Sava’s shimmering frescoes radiate a brilliance that leaves an indelible impression.

The atmosphere within the church is one of reverence and serenity. Worshippers kneel before sacred icons, while a colossal fresco of Jesus, bathed in golden light, commands attention. It’s impossible not to pause and take it all in, feeling a profound sense of awe that lingers long after stepping outside.

A unique discovery awaits visitors just outside the church — a row of incense burners, their fragrant smoke curling toward the heavens. Though I had previously associated incense with Taoist or Buddhist traditions, I learned that it is also deeply rooted in Christian practices, symbolizing prayers rising to the divine.

As the day winds down, the Church of Saint Sava takes on a new enchantment. The quiet flow of the nearby Danube River and the warm glow of the setting sun cast the church in a magical light. It’s more than just a magnificent structure; it’s a testament to Belgrade’s rich history and spiritual depth, leaving you with a sense that it holds countless more stories to share.
