Seafood on the menu in Ningbo

NINGBO has some rather tasty cuisine. Known as Yongbang cuisine, chefs here are famous for preserving the original taste of fresh ingredients.

Seafood is a big part of Ningbo’s cuisine. Specialties include yellow croaker soup with pickled potherb mustard and turtle steamed with crystal sugar.

Dim sum like rice dumplings with black sesame filling and “eight-treasure” rice with red bean paste are also popular local specialties.

Hotel restaurants in the Zhejiang city have special autumn menus at the moment. Most feature a variety of seafood and other classic Ningbo dishes.

Shangri-La Hotel, Ningbo

Characterized by refined elegance and stylish decor, Shang Palace is known for its authentic Ningbo and Cantonese dishes.

Executive chef Zhou Hui’s signature dishes include braised assorted seafood with East China Sea pomfret, braised wild turtle with homemade sauce, and braised crab with rice cakes in special sauce. The latest seasonal menu starts from18 yuan (US$2.8) per dish. The restaurant features elegant Chinese furnishings. Sixteen private dining rooms are available.

Park Hyatt Ningbo Resort and Spa

Assorted seasonal seafood such as green crab from Sanmen, king prawn, mantis shrimp, gold conch, baby octopus and sea whelk highlight the autumn menu at the Park Hyatt’s Seafood House restaurant.

A seafood party combo is ideal for gatherings and parties. It includes lobster, crab, baby abalone, mussel, sea whelk, golden conch, baby cuttlefish and other varieties. Seafood is usually steamed to preserve the natural flavors and nutrients. Six homemade sauces include minced ginger, yellow mustard and pickled chilies for those who require stronger flavors.

The seafood party combo is available for groups of four or 10 people. Twenty-four hour advance booking is required for this dish.

Seafood House’s autumn offering also features dishes such as braised Xiangshan goose with Parma ham and homemade dried yellow croaker, a soup that’s sweet but not greasy. For meat lovers, the five-spiced pork with homemade plum sauce is particularly good.

Ningbo Marriott Hotel

The autumn menu of the Emerald Sea Chinese Restaurant at Ningbo Marriott Hotel features a number of new, tasty and nutritious dishes.

The decocted prawn with Chinese yam and XO sauce is a decent autumn dish that’s fresh and soft.

The stir-fried pork with Italian vinegar is crispy outside but tender within. It’s fat but not greasy, and it’s paired with a fresh fruit salad.

Other featured dishes include boiled crab with celery and carrot, and pan-fried oysters.

Pan Pacific Ningbo

Hai Tian Lo restaurant at Pan Pacific Ningbo has started it autumn seasonal menu with fabulous fish dishes.

Smoked fish is popular in Ningbo. It is usually made with black carp or grass carp, but chefs at Hai Tien Lo opted for butterfish to create a sweet and sour fish dish.

The Guo Qiao yellow croaker porridge soup uses first-class rice that’s stewed slowly with yellow croaker.

The braised dried rice shoots with pork bone broth is a popular vegetable dish in Ningbo. Wild rice shoots is a nutrient-rich vegetable that’s also known as “ginseng in water.” Hai Tian Lo uses dried shoots instead of fresh ones to create a unique taste when braised in pork bone broth.

Hai Tian Lo serves authentic Ningbo cuisine and regional specialties. Guests can enjoy a calm dining ambience in one of the 20 private dining rooms and savor fresh seasonal produce prepared by executive chef Leaf Ye, who uses healthy recipes that incorporate traditional Chinese medicine practices.
