Travel secrets from hotel GM
NATIONALITY: Austria
Profession/Title: General manager of Grand Millennium Shanghai Hongqiao
How often do you travel?
Three to four times a year for vacation. On business trips, I like to add some nights to get used to the time change.
Favorite traveling style?
Business class on planes; if in Austria, on my BMW K1600GL motorbike; or on a dive vessel.
Q: What do you always do after returning from a trip?
A: Contact my friends and have dinner with them to share my experiences and insights from the trip.
Q: What do you always search for during a trip?
A: Relax, recharge and meet the locals! On city vacations, my wife and I like small boutique accommodations in the center of the destination. On ocean holidays we also like small but high-grade hotels — rooms or villa directly on the beach with the possibility to scuba dive. For culture travel we like original local rooms close to the sights we are visiting.
Q: What do you always pack?
A: My Kindle and iPad, two reading glasses, cash in dollars or euros, passport and credit cards.
Q: What is your preferred airline?
A: Austrian, Lufthansa and Thai.
Q: Do you have any tips about seating on a flight?
A: I am 186cm tall. In business class this is not an issue, but if traveling coach, I book an emergency seat or first-row seat.
Q: How do you get over jet lag?
A: Sleep and swimming to make myself tired, and get up early in the morning.
Q: What are your favorite hotels? What makes these hotels so memorable?
A: Independent or local boutique, and art hotels or guesthouses. They are original in style and most of the time have very friendly owners and staff.
Q: What do you value most when choosing a hotel?
A: Free Wi-Fi, room size, free indoor parking, location, view and breakfast served.
Q: What hotels do you look forward to staying at in the future?
A: Same as in the past. Maybe on our next vacation we’ll go to Cebu in the Philippines, and stay at the Malapascua dive hotel right on the beach.
Q: Recommend one of your favorite destinations. Why is it so special?
A: Vienna, Austria. It’s an old capital in Europe, with great buildings, nice art and world-class culture at every corner. It was voted the best city to live in for five consecutive years or so.
Q: What do you do upon arriving at any destination?
A: Have a glass of water.
Q: Where are you planning to go next and why?
A: Malapascua or Vietnam or Thailand — all for scuba diving.
