China’s New Year film season sparkles with fresh releases

CHINA’S box office revenue for 2025 has exceeded 46 billion yuan (US$6.48 billion), even before the new releases for the New Year film season.

This month, more than 50 films are scheduled to grace the big screen. Many of them, having garnered acclaim at major international film festivals, are generating buzz even before their release and bringing fresh creativity and distinctive perspectives to Chinese cinema.

The biopic film “Hidden Landscapes,” about Chen Qigang, a renowned Chinese composer and “master of orchestration” (according to The Telegraph), has garnered praise from local moviegoers.

The film especially resonates with the students of local universities and allows the audience to see not a maestro, but an ordinary person navigating the uncertainties of life.

Director Guo Xufeng explores the musician’s seven-year solo artistic journey. He does not attribute Chen’s success to his achievements, such as music direction for the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony or winning prestigious French awards. Instead, the film focuses on Chen’s music and daily life.

Guo viewed this filming journey as a pilgrimage. “Looking back on these seven years, I realize that while documenting an artist’s retreat from the world, I also unexpectedly found the direction of my own heart,” he said.

Meanwhile, “Zootopia 2: Rise of the Non-Mammalians” has injected new vitality into the film market following its release simultaneously in North America on November 26.

The film has racked up an estimated US$556 million in global ticket sales over the US Thanksgiving weekend last week.

It has also become the 41st film in China’s cinematic history to cross the 2 billion yuan mark and ranks third among the highest-grossing animated films in China’s film history.

Don’t miss the upcoming domestic and international hits to celebrate the New Year.
