1 in 10 city taxis bogus: officials
ONE in 10 of the cabs touting for trade on the streets of Shanghai is a fake, officials said yesterday.
While the city has about 50,000 licensed cabs, these are joined by around 5,500 "cloned cabs" - unlicensed vehicles modified to look like taxis, complete with meters and illuminated signs bought on the black market. Now the Traffic Law Enforcement Team said official taxis will be equipped with electronic tags that allow for instant identification. A tag will contain details of the taxi license, engine information, the car plate number and vehicle color, said the team. The city is cracking down on the cloned taxis, with more than 400 seized this year.
