10 years' labor recovered from burnt disk
PROFESSOR Lan Fan, whose computer was damaged in the November 15 high-rise blaze, has started working on his book again as most of his manuscript had been recovered from his burnt hard disk, his wife Lan Di said today.
Lan said the multimillion-character book on film art took her husband nearly 10 years to write and was ready to send to the publisher last November when the fire gutted their 28-storey building on Jiaozhou Road in Jing'an District, killing 58 people and injuring 71 others.
After the fire, firefighters found two charred computers and several hard disks in Lan's apartment. Learning about the professor's agony, they sent the disks to local computer specialists for recovery.
Lan said most of her husband's book had been salvaged, but the recovered data was in disorder and her husband had to restore and revise the text.
