11 detained over web gambling
CITY police said yesterday they have detained 11 people for allegedly organizing gambling on the Internet using overseas servers.
The suspects had accumulated more than 97 million yuan (US$15 million) in bets, police said. Officers claim the chief suspect, surnamed Xu, set up a gambling website and promoted it in mahjong parlors in Yangpu District. Police conducted a raid on September 19 and confiscated Xu's computer and 99,000 yuan.
