12 Detained Over Dummy iPhone Scam
HAWKERS offering iPhone4s in the streets are likely to switch real ones for fakes as customers hand over their cash, Hongkou District police said yesterday.
This warning came as 12 people were detained over this scam. The gang, led by a man surnamed Qiu, would allegedly show victims a real iPhone4 and ask for a low price. But as the victim was paying, the gang would make the switch. More than 27 cases are said to involve the gang, involving 50,000 yuan (US$7,695).
On May 14, police raided several locations and detained 12 people. Some 30 fake iPhone4s and 10,000 yuan were confiscated at an address on Changshou Road.
The case was still under investigation yesterday.
