12 arrested as police unravel drugs web

POLICE have detained 12 suspects in Shanghai for alleged drug trades involving 3.9 kilograms of "ice" and heroin, Baoshan District police said yesterday.

The cross-province prosecution involved suspects linked in a web of drug transactions in Shanghai and Yunnan, Guangdong and Sichuan provinces.

Baoshan District police said they began their investigation in March when they found a drug-trafficking gang centered around Jiang, a local man, frequently purchasing a large amount of crystal methamphetamine ("ice") and heroin from various suppliers and selling them in the city.

Wang, a man hired by Jiang, was then found to have employed a 43-year-old Zhejiang woman to transport heroin hidden in her body from southwestern Yunnan Province to Shanghai from last October.

In April, police received a tip-off that the woman would arrive in Shanghai by plane with drugs for Wang. The two were picked up by police at Hongqiao Airport on April 4, and 201 grams of heroin were recovered.

Police received further tip-offs that suppliers in Yunnan would be arranging other carriers to smuggle drugs into the city. On April 18, three drug dealers were caught on a train to Shanghai along with 1,126 grams of heroin.

Further investigation led officers to a supplier surnamed Yuan in Guangdong Province who sold drugs to Jiang in Shanghai. Yuan and two accomplices were detained and found to be carrying 1,489 grams of "ice" and heroin.

Jiang was caught by police on June 18 in an apartment on Dongxin Road, Putuo District, with another three dealers. Also seized in the raid was more than 900,000 yuan (US$131,676) in cash.

Baoshan District police said they were still hunting for other drug traffickers through leads provided by the suspects.
