12 city students hurt in bus crash

TWELVE students from Shanghai Sanda University were confirmed to be among the injured when a bus overturned in Tonglu, Zhejiang Province, on Sunday.

These included a female student who was in critical condition yesterday and receiving treatment at the No. 2 Hospital affiliated to the Medical School of Zhejiang University, officials said.

Another student was also kept in the hospital, while a third was transferred to the Shanghai No. 1 People's Hospital. Both were in a stable condition.

The others, who were only slightly injured, have returned to Shanghai, according to the university.

The Shanghai Public Health Bureau has sent experts to Tonglu, aiding local doctors treating the seriously injured student. University teachers have also rushed to Tonglu, officials said.

The students, all seniors at the School of Management, went to Tonglu on a trip organized by the Shanghai Shanhe Travel Service Co Ltd without university involvement.

They were heading for Longmen Ancient Town when the accident happened.

The accident killed three, including a Zhejiang native tour guide, and injured 28, according to Tonglu police.

Police said the accident may have been caused by driver error. At that time the road was wet, and, according to officers, the driver didn't realize there was a junction before him. He applied the brakes but lost control of the bus. The bus driver injured several vertebrae.

The Shanghai Tourism Administration said it was continuing to investigate the case yesterday.
