1,300 suspects caught

MORE than 1,300 criminal suspects have been detained in the past two months in an intensifying campaign to catch those listed as wanted by the police in Shanghai, officials said yesterday.

The Shanghai Public Security Bureau said 1,345 suspects had been caught since May 27, including four murder suspects. The campaign is continuing, police said.

On Thursday last week two suspects, surnamed Liu and Hu, were nabbed at an Internet cafe in Guangdong Province as suspects in a murder case in the city's Minhang District five days earlier, police said.

The two allegedly hacked a resident surnamed Chen to death in front of a neighborhood of Lane 668 Xinbei Road on July 9. Liu and Hu had confessed to the crime, police said in their press release yesterday.

On Wednesday last week, a resident surnamed Gao was stabbed and killed in a corridor of a residential complex in the suburban Minhang District.

Police said they soon identified a suspect surnamed Xu, who allegedly had a dispute with Gao, and filed a wanted circular in their network. Xu was caught about 6pm the same day on an expressway in Anhui Province, police said.

Last Monday police caught a robbery suspect, who had been on the lam for 22 years, as they patrolled the city's Baoshan District.
