1,500 boxes of eggs spill on highway in early-hour mishap

ABOUT 1,500 boxes of eggs were smashed early this morning when a truck hit the guardrail along the city's Middle Ring Road. The accident which occurred around 2am caused light injury to a passenger and a loss of about 300,000 yuan (US$ 45,455).

"We tried to avoid a taxi behind the truck," said the driver's brother surnamed Ji. "The taxi driver accelerated past us, making us to dodge and bump into the guardrail."

Ji and his brother own a company and were delivering eggs to a Shanghai market. He said neither the truck nor the 1,500 boxes of eggs were covered by insurance and they would bear a loss of up to 200,000 yuan for the eggs and approximately 100,000 yuan for truck repair.

The road was covered with the jelly of broken eggs and was slippery until police and cleaning cars came to clear up the mess. Traffic resumed at about 8:15am.
