18 jailed in scam to cheat UPS

EIGHTEEN gang members who cheated the United Parcel Service, causing a loss of more than 9.8 million yuan (US$1.55 million) to the shipping company, were dealt criminal sentences yesterday from the Pudong New Area People's Court.

The gang members, including five employees of a UPS outlet in Shanghai, were sentenced to 17 months to eight years and 10 months in prison and were ordered to compensate UPS for the losses.

The gang took the advantage of UPS's DWS freight weighing system, in which a parcel is weighed twice and the system will scan the bar code on the parcel and select the lighter weight to calculate the shipping expense, the court heard.

One of the convicts, surnamed Liu, admitted the group devised a system to cheat the company. Between September 2009 and July 2010, the gang transported goods weighing more than 140,000 kilograms, but UPS recorded only 5,800 kilograms, causing a loss of more than 9.8 million yuan to the company.

The 18 gang members were arrested after UPS alerted the police after an internal tip-off.
