2 dead in Putuo shooting case, 10 suspects caught

POLICE in Shanghai have detained 10 suspects in the fatal clash between two gangs yesterday that left two dead, local authorities said today.

An argument over debt dispute between the gangs became violent and shots were fired yesterday noon at the entrance of Huili Garden on Changshou Road, Putuo District, police said.

A seriously wounded man died yesterday after he fled the scene, while another one died in Huadong Hospital at about 10:40am this morning. Two others were injured and being treated in the hospital, police said.

The first two suspects were caught at 6pm in Shanghai's Long-distance Bus Station in Zhabei District. Others were caught later in Caobao Rd., Dushi Rd in Minhang District and Rongle Road E. in Songjiang District.

Police confiscated four home-made guns, one knife and two vehicles involved in the case.

Chinese law prohibits the private ownership of guns. The last time Shanghai witnessed a shooting on the street was in July 2002, when one gang fired shots at another, injuring two people.
