2 die after elevator cable snaps

TWO workers died and another two were injured yesterday morning while installing a cargo elevator in a warehouse in Shanghai.

While they were installing the elevator, it suddenly dropped down after the cable broke, with two workers inside and another two on top.

The Pudong New Area's work safety authority has started an investigation.

The injured, Yang Jun, 27 and Zhang Lichun, 42, were sent to the Huashan Hospital and were in a critical condition yesterday.

"Yang had very low blood pressure when he arrived and Zhang is in a coma," said Dr Wang Jing'en, director of the unit. "They suffered skull and limb fractures."

The accident happened at about 9am in the warehouse at Jinwen Road, Zhuqiao Town, which is under construction. Five workers of the Xizi Otis Elevator Co Ltd were installing a cargo elevator at a height of three floors.

"The cable fractured during the installation," said an official, surnamed Wu, with the district's safety bureau.
