2 elevator incidents investigated

LOCAL work safety officials and quality watchdogs are still investigating Saturday's two elevator mishaps where a woman fell to her death and another was seriously injured.

The first case occurred at Hualian Commercial Building on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall at lunch time on Saturday when a 35-year-old woman from the central province of Hunan stepped into an elevator shaft and fell to her death from the sixth floor.

Witnesses said that the elevator door opened when the woman pressed the button, but the elevator, being repaired, was not there and the woman walked into the elevator shaft.

No barriers or warnings around the open elevator were seen, witnesses said.

Mall officials said that repairmen were fixing three elevators and placed warning signs at the doors. But the signs were taken away by some other people before the accident, the officials said.

Only two hours later, a woman was seriously injured in a residential building in Songjing District. Witnesses said an elevator fell from the 16th floor and then shot to the 27th floor at high speed at about 2pm on Saturday.
