2 in custody after deadly accident
POLICE have taken two people into custody after two workers were killed and six others injured when an under-construction workshop collapsed on Saturday afternoon in Pudong New Area, district police said yesterday.
The collapse occurred when construction workers poured concrete for a 7-meter-high roof that was only held up with an iron sheet, which caused more than 300 square meters of the workshop to collapse, the city's work safety watchdog said.
Two of the injured were still in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Pudong New Area People's Hospital and one of them was unconscious, the hospital said.
A witness surnamed Hua saw firefighters free several workers from the debris. Hua said they looked "scary" as their heads and bodies were covered in blood. Two victims were confirmed dead at the scene, police said.
The building firm didn't have a license for such projects and began work without permission, the bureau said. The workshop was owned by Shanghai Yuanda Plasticware Co Ltd.
