2 jailed for dumping industrial waste

TWO men have been jailed for up to 18 months for causing serious pollution by dumping industrial waste into a river, forcing 200 villagers out of their homes in Jiading District.

Jiading District People's Court jailed one surnamed Cao for 18 months with a fine of 150,000 yuan (US$21,967), and sentenced the other surnamed Chen to 10 months in prison with a fine of 100,000 yuan, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Cao pretended to be the owner of a licensed environmental disposal company and helped a Jiading chemical factory to dispose of its industrial waste for 200 yuan per ton.

He then subcontracted the deal to Chen who directly dumped 10 tons of the waste into a river amid farmland.

Villagers caught Chen while he was dumping another 18 tons of the waste in the river, and police later caught Cao.

The waste was poisonous and polluted the nearby farms, forcing about 200 villagers to leave their homes.

The chemical factory paid more than 700,000 yuan to clean up the environmental damage.
