2 sentenced in Apple store thefts

APPLE'S in-store security system does not always deter thieves from taking the firm's goods away from local retail stores.

Huangpu District People's Court yesterday sentenced two men who stole three iPhones from two Apple stores to 20 months and 14 months in prison.

Prosecutors said the pair and a third convict, who was under 18 and tried in a separate case, entered Apple stores on Huaihai Road M. and Century Avenue, where they stole three iPhones worth more than 10,000 yuan (US$1,586).

The court said the trio used a screwdriver to open the back covers of iPhones, which were secured to Apple's security system. They left the back covers on the display desk and took the rest of the phones without alerting the alarm system.

One convict, surnamed Jiang, 28, said he sold the stolen goods at low prices and shared the money with the others. The three were caught by police in a restaurant near Shanghai Railway Station last September.
