2 teens drown in new park not yet open
TWO teenagers drowned yesterday while having fun at a lake in a park not yet opened to the public in the Pudong New Area yesterday, police said.
The accident happened at about 6pm when the two boys, aged 13 and 14, sank in the water and didn't come up at an artificial lake in the newly built park in Gangcheng Park in Gaoqiao Town.
Two classmates of the boys called police, who retrieved the boys from the water and rushed them to a nearby hospital. The boys were pronounced dead in the hospital.
One of the boys could not swim, the family told a reporter from xinmin.cn.
The lake where the accident happened is over 600 square meters in size with some areas up to four meters deep. There are many signs warning people not to swim or fish in the water, but no one was patrolling the area since the park is not officially open.
Police warned parents to watch their children since drowning cases happen frequently during summer vacation. In Fengxian District, the bodies of two 13-year-old teenagers were recovered last week after they were reported missing on Monday. They were last seen swimming in the Huangpu River.
