200 sign up for 1-yuan party
MORE than 200 people have applied to join a Spring Festival celebration being organized by a local man for non-local white-collar workers who can't get back to their home towns for the holiday.
Shao Jianpei announced his plan last week for a Chinese New Year's Eve party which will cost each participant just 1 yuan (15 US cents).
Shao, who is retired, said he will hold a draw at the end of this week to select the lucky 100 participants.
"Many non-local white-collar workers will stay in the city over the Chinese New Year to save money in the economic crisis or because they have difficulty in buying train tickets," he said. "I want to let non-local workers feel the warmth of the family.
"They can have a merry party together instead of staying at home lonely," he said.
He has managed to find sponsors, including a Website and a restaurant, to pay for 10 tables, with each table costing roughly 1,000 yuan.
Shao took up computing about four years ago after he retired and soon became a Webmaster on several popular online forums, including Soufun.com.
Since then he had organized lots of various activities including football matches and basketball and table tennis games among non-local white-collar workers through the Internet.
"They are very busy in work and tend to stay at home at weekends.
"I like to organize recreational activities to let them have fun and make more friends in the city," Shao said.
