25 held as police bust fake watch ring

A gang of 25 suspects have been detained for selling counterfeit watches, headphones and scarfs to overseas buyers via the Internet, Shanghai police said this morning.

The gang, led by a man surnamed Shi, purchased fake Rolex, Hublot, Breitling and TagHauer watches from Taobao.com at prices from 50-200 yuan (US$8-32) and then sold them via online shopping sites for US$30-200, according to the Economic Crime Department of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau.

Police seized more than 2,500 counterfeit watches, 500 headphones and 300 scarfs in the gang's hideouts with an estimated value of over 80 million yuan.

Police said they began to zero in on the gang early this year after receiving an alert from colleagues in the Internet Safety Department.

Following the lead, the police found the suspects were scattered in Shanghai and the provinces of Guangdong, Henan and Fujian. They were caught in a coordinated action on March 20.
