27 jailed over gang's robbery spree

GANG members who committed 52 robberies in 14 months have been jailed for between two years and life by Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.

The ringleader, 22-year-old Shi Guangyong, organized a group of 27 young men to rob businesses in gangs of at least three from December 2006, Oriental Morning Post reported today.

They had robbed more than 710,000 yuan (US$104,412) in cash and goods in their spree across Shanghai, the suburbs, and in Zhejiang, Fujian and Shandong Provinces, the report said.

They were caught in February, 2008. All gang members are from outside Shanghai and most had only primary school education, the report said.
