29 punished over illegal firecrackers
A TOTAL of 29 people have been punished for illegally selling, storing, transporting or setting off fireworks and firecrackers in 23 cases since the beginning of the year, Shanghai police said yesterday.
Fireworks and firecrackers are sold at a limited number of authorized stores in Shanghai, and their use is banned within the Outer Ring Road.
Five of the people who were detained could face criminal charges, police said.
In the Pudong New Area, police discovered over 40 boxes of fireworks and firecrackers at a construction site on Chuanliu Highway on January 11 after reports from the public. A man surnamed Chen, who is said to have transported and stored the fireworks, was later caught in Kunshan in Jiangsu Province, where over 1,000 boxes were found, according to police.
In Fengxian District, two men were caught illegally selling fireworks and firecrackers also after information from the public. The two are alleged to have purchased the fireworks out of town and stored them in a bike garage at their home with no fire prevention facilities.
