2nd Shanghai wetland survey launched
SHANGHAI will launch its second survey for local wetland resources through remote-sensing technology, local officials said today.
It has been more than 10 years since Shanghai launched the first wetland resources survey in the 1990s, after which the city's wetlands have changed greatly.
For example, the sediment volume at the mouth of Yangtze River changed greatly under the impact of water conservancy projects on the river. Water pollution, infringement of foreign creatures, human activities all have influences on the wetland ecological system, officials said.
This year, the survey will rely on modern technologies such as remote-sensing, geographic information system (GIS) and global position system (GPS) to update wetland resources data.
Through remote-sensing, the survey has achieved information about the type, area and distribution of wetlands in Shanghai.
