3 arrested for attempting to rob and murder woman taxi driver
THREE suspects, who robbed a 27-year-old female cab driver and attempted to kill her by setting fire to the car, were arrested on charges of robbery and murder, police said yesterday.
The oldest of the three is 24 years old, while the youngest is 19. They said they robbed the driver to pay back debts.
Wang Yu, an unlicensed taxi driver, was robbed by three men who posed as passengers in Jinshan District on May 8. Two of them got into the taxi at about 9pm and after a 10-minute drive attempted to strangle her.
They asked her to pull over and then tied her up. They then asked her to hand over all the valuables. She was left on the backseat of the taxi, bound and tied up after the third person reached the spot.
The three people then drove the taxi to the Zhangjing riverbank and tried to push the taxi into the river.
But the taxi got stuck at the barriers along the river.
They then broke the fuel tank cap with stones and attempted to light the tank. By that time, Wang managed to free herself and escape. She cried for help and the suspects ran away. But they left behind the mobile phone and the gold necklace they had robbed.
Police checked the surveillance video and found the three men had fled to Caojing Town. When the police arrived at the town on May 9 morning, the suspects had run away again. They were apprehended after receiving a tip-off.
