3 detained after vendor's death

THREE people have been detained after the death of a street vendor in Metro Line 3's Baoshan Road Station on Monday, Shanghai Metro police said yesterday.

Witnesses saw four or five people attack the vendor, who was selling toys near Exit 1 around 7pm. He was kicked and punched in an attack that lasted less than five minutes.

Witnesses said the vendor, surnamed Guo, tried to fight them off and escape but was outnumbered.

"He ran toward the station at first, trying to escape them, but those men went after him," one witness said. "They left minutes later. The man was on the ground and not moving." Store owners called the emergency services but Guo was declared dead at the scene.

Police said they caught three migrants including one man surnamed Zhu at their homes by 3am yesterday. Zhu had visited Guo's stall about 6:40pm on Monday, inquiring about the toys' prices, officers said. Guo had quarreled with Zhu and hit him, witnesses said.

Zhu made several phone calls, police said, and Guo was attacked about 20 minutes later.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
