3 workers die in accidents on building sites
THREE workers were killed and three others were injured at two separate construction sites in Shanghai yesterday.
A morning accident in Xuhui District was the most serious, with two deaths and three injures resulting from the collapse of a shaft platform two levels below ground on an office building site.
Five people working on the platform fell and were buried in concrete when the structure collapsed at 10:45am on the site at the intersection of Chuanchang Road and Zhongshan No. 2 Road S.
Firefighting department rescue teams rushed to the site and managed to extract four workers by noon but the last one was not found until about 2pm.
They were taken to Zhongshan Hospital but two were pronounced dead soon after.
The injured were in a stable condition yesterday.
An injured worker's relative, surnamed Yu, said the workers were cutting steel bars on the platform.
Local work safety supervision bureau and construction authorities said late yesterday they were still investigating the cause of the accident.
The second incident happened at 3:30pm when a crane truck toppled in Hongkou District.
The driver died after falling into a 10-meter deep foundation ditch.
The crane lost balance as it was lifting construction materials, witnesses said. The crane arm, about 20 meters long, broke into two.
