30 charged in long series of fuel thefts

THIRTY suspects have been arrested and charged with the theft of tons of gasoline and diesel fuel from big vehicles on the street, Baoshan District prosecutors said yesterday.

Police detained 86 people between April and May this year after more than 350 thefts and robberies involving oil were reported in the district's Yanghang area from August 2010 to April 2011.

Prosecutors said the thefts were usually perpetrated by suspects using modified cars. Such cars were converted to store more stolen oil by removing and replacing the back seats with homemade oil pumps and tubes.

Prosecutors said the suspects usually took weapons to threaten drivers and hit witnesses. In one case, Wang Wei, a security guard at a parking lot, was knocked to his death after he spotted three suspects stealing gasoline. In another case, a witness suffered multiple fractures to the head.
