33 officials surrender over corruption

A TOTAL of 33 state employees have surrendered themselves to local prosecutors over the past year for being involved in corruption, up 83.3 percent since the previous year, Shanghai Prosecutors' Office said today.

According to official statistics, prosecutors received 3,791 reports from people from June 2009 to May 2010. Of these, 2,336 were tips about corruption cases that are supposed to be handled by prosecutors.

"Tips from the public have become a very important source to help prosecutors uncover cases of graft, bribery and malpractice since the corruption reporting center of the prosecution department was formed in June 1988," said prosecutor Lin Zhongming.

"Scared by the reports, more state employees with corruption problems elected to surrender themselves."

Prosecutors said people preferred anonymous reporting. Local prosecutors received 1,600 anonymous reports and 703 reports with real names during the period.
