36 drivers named, shamed and banned for life as city police intensify crackdown on unruly driving
SHANGHAI police today announced a list of 36 drivers who have been banned for life from driving in the country.
It was the first time that the local police publicly shamed the drivers with a name list released and revoked their licenses as the citywide crackdown on unruly driving continues to intensify.
Their names and their driving license numbers were made public, a decision that the police said was taken after consultations with a local court.
Police however did not elaborate on the details of their cases but said in some cases, it proved fatal. The traffic violations included drunk driving and hit-and-run cases.
Of the 36 drivers who were handed lifetime bans, 21 had got their driving licenses in Shanghai. A woman was among those banned.
Police said even if the banned drivers managed to get a driving license from abroad, they would not be allowed to drive in China again.
“As long as he is a Chinese national, the lifetime driving ban is forever,” said Huang Qi, a traffic police officer in charge of vehicle administration.
