4 company officials arrested in link to deadly fire

FOUR more people, all managers of companies in connection with the deadly high-rise fire on Monday, were arrested yesterday, while the death toll has risen to 58, the municipal government announced today.

As more DNA test results coming out, the death toll has been rewritten, five more than the previously confirmed 53 deaths, police said.

Of the 58 people killed, 22 were males and 36 females.

The city's construction safety authority launched a citywide inspection today. All building sites were ordered to suspend work for safety check and staff education between 9am and 11am today.

Shanghai Daily reporter followed government inspectors to several construction sites in Xuhui District this morning. One site received a warning ticket and was ordered to fix the problem within one day after inspectors found the building company failed to store inflammable materials at a safe distance -- a major breach of the safety rules.

Some migrant workers at the site also said they did not know how to use a fire extinguisher. The company was ordered to teach basic fire-control skills to its workers.
