4 injured as car crashes onto sidewalk

FOUR people were injured after being hit by a car that lost control and crashed onto a sidewalk in downtown Shanghai yesterday.

All four victims, two men and two women, were sent to a nearby hospital for treatment. One man suffered severe injuries to his leg.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Tianyaoqiao Road and Nandan Road E. in Xuhui District about 6:15pm when the car made a right turn but lost control.

"I just heard a loud bang," a witness, surnamed Chen, told local news website Eastday.com. "After hitting the pedestrians the car veered back onto the road and hit another car."

Police said the vehicle had a temporary license plate number on the back window and that the driver was not injured.

Blood and a sneaker was spotted at the scene. Traffic was backed up as hundreds of on-lookers blocked the roads.

Local police are still investigating the accident.
