4 knocked down by SUV, one still in coma

FOUR people were wounded and one is still in coma after a woman started her car too fast and mowed them down in a downtown parking lot this afternoon.

The accident occurred on Tianyaoqiao Road in Xuhui District at 1:30pm when the 50-year-old woman surnamed Ren shifted to a high gear when starting her SUV, which lurched forth and knocked down four people in the path, local police said.

The woman was stunned and tried to reverse her car only to crash into four other cars parked behind, the police said.

Two of the victims are parking lot guards; another man and a woman were passers-by, according to Lancer Chee, a witness of the accident.

Chee told Shanghai Daily that he saw two victims lying on the ground near the wheels of the SUV with blood over their bodies. He said one victim suffered incontinence and was then sent to a nearby hospital.

"It was lunch time. There were many people on the street, walking across the parking lot as it is a shortcut for them to shuttle between offices and restaurants," said Chee.

Another male witness said the SUV was running so fast and knocked down the people as if it was a scene from a Hollywood movie.

Police have detained the woman and investigation is ongoing.
